lower your fall risk

You can make simple modifications to avoid falls. Each year, one in four elderly people suffer a fall. Falls can cause fractures (broken bones), difficulty going from one side to another and other health problems, especially if you are over 65 years old.

Fractures can cause pain and disability. They also make daily activities, such as cooking or showering, more difficult to do without help. Hip fractures are among the leading causes of health problems and death in the elderly.

You do not have to be afraid to fall. Take these steps to avoid falls:

  • Talk to the doctor about falls and how to avoid them.
  • Do exercises to improve the balance and strength of the legs.
  • Check with the doctor or pharmacist for the medications you take. Some medications can make you dizzy or sleepy.
  • Do the eye exam once a year or every two years. If you have changes in your vision, try making new glasses or contact lenses.
  • Do what is necessary to make your home a safer place. For example, put handrails or bars inside and outside the bathtub and shower, as well as on both sides of the stairs.
